History Of Birmingham Coffin Works
Alfred and Edwin Newman founded Newman Brothers Coffin Works in 1882 as a brass foundry in Birmingham. The company later shifted its focus to producing coffin furniture, including handles, breastplates, crucifixes, shrouds, robes, and decorative ornaments. In 1989, the business ceased trading, but thanks to the efforts of the Birmingham Conservation Trust, the building was preserved and transformed into the Coffin Works. This unique site is now a visitor attraction and mixed-use development, serving as the only surviving example of a purpose-built Victorian coffin furniture manufactory. The company moved to a new factory in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter in 1894, where it specialized in manufacturing brass furniture for coffins. The funerary industry presented greater profit opportunities, and the production of coffin furnishings used similar manufacturing techniques and processes. The term "coffin furniture" encompasses a wide range of products, including handles, crucifixes, nameplates, ornaments, shrouds, funerary gowns, coffin linings, and cushions.
