Built-in and opened in 1756, Derby Gaol was the 2nd of three county jails built in the county and was a place of terror, torment, and death.
The Gaol housed hundreds of prisoners during its time who were brutally executed and incarcerated, held whilst awaiting their trials, often in cramped and terrible conditions.
There were over 200 hanging offences in England for exceedingly minor crimes such as poaching and stealing; during these times, many were held at Derby old Gaol before meeting their untimely death by the hangman’s rope.

Gresley Old Hall is well known for its many years of hauntings; many people have reported a young girl dressed in period clothing. Many believe that she is the spirit of a young maid who lost her life when this location caught fire. There is also a spirit who many reports to be a tall, angry man who certainly likes to make his presence known; many people feel overwhelmed leaving certain areas and refusing to return. This is extremely common in one of the rooms on the second floor. The Attic area is also very daunting. Dark shadows are often witnessed here, darting around the doors and standing in corners.
