In those days, hanging was considered entertainment, and he was only a young man of 16 years old. It is possible that his description of Tess's hanging was influenced by what he saw as a young man.
The last public hanging in England took place on August 10, 1858, at Dorchester Prison. James Seale was executed for murder.
