History Of Dorchester Prison
The Dorchester Prison was built in 1154 on the site of a medieval castle, boasting a rich history that spans centuries. Dorchester Prison was completed in 1795 and was a place of many executions. One of the most famous executions in history was that of Martha Brown. Thomas Hardy was amongst the audience of nearly 3000 people. In those days, hanging was considered entertainment, and he was only a young man of 16 years old. However, he was shocked and disturbed by what he witnessed, and this experience may have influenced his writing of Tess of the D'Urbervilles. It is possible that his description of Tess's hanging was influenced by what he saw as a young man.
The last public hanging in England took place on August 10, 1858, at Dorchester Prison. James Seale was executed for murder.
Dorchester Prison is a place of significant historical importance. While it has a dark past of executions and deaths, it also has a rich history that we intend to explore during an overnight ghost hunt.
Plans have been made to deconsecrate the ground of Dorchester Prison, where the bodies of executed prisoners and other deceased inmates still remain. These remains will be relocated to their final resting place.
