History Of Saltmarshe Hall

Saltmarshe Hall is a 19th-century country house located in the village of Saltmarshe, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is a grade II* listed building, situated on the north bank of the Ouse, opposite Goole, and surrounded by a beautiful 17-acre garden.

The house was constructed of brick faced with ashlar and has Welsh slate roofs. It consists of a square two-storey main building with a five-bay frontage and a five-bay servant's wing attached to it. The Saltmarshe family has owned the estate since the Norman Conquest.

Saltmarshe Hall was built in 1825-8 by Prichett and Watson architects, James Pigott Pritchett and Charles Watson. It was built for Philip Saltmarshe at a cost of £4000. The stables were added in 1842.

The property was passed down to Colonel Phillip Saltmarshe (1853-1941), who served in the Royal Horse Artillery and fought in the Afghan and Boer Wars. He was also a J.P. and Deputy Lieutenant. The last member of the Saltmarshe family to live in the house was Captain Philip Saltmarshe, who died in the early 1970s without an heir. The house was then sold to Philip and Sally Bean, and in 2009, it was purchased by the Whyte family.

Saltmarshe Hall is a significant historical landmark, showcasing the unique architectural style of the 19th century. Although the hall has been through several owners, it has remained a symbol of the Saltmarshe family's legacy for over 900 years.
