Legend has it that the soldier died after accidentally blowing himself up while loading a cannon. Visitors have heard footsteps, dragging sounds, and murmuring voices throughout the halls. A lady in white has also been witnessed roaming the barracks and the burial ground next door.

Join our team for a unique and intense ghost-hunting experience that will take you outside your comfort zone after dark. You won't doubt the haunting of this old hall after your overnight stay.

History of Vane Tempest Hall

Vane Tempest Hall is located in Gilesgate, Durham, Durham, England. It is currently used as a local community centre but was known as the Gilesgate Militia Barracks. According to various historians, there were two very different dates when this building was constructed.

Vane Tempest is a listed building, built-in 1851 and used by the Durham military until it was converted into a Community Association Centre.”

The majestic Vane Tempest Hall has had a chequered history dating to the 1860s. Since then, it has been home to several Army units and even doubled as a smallpox hospital in 1884. The Barracks stables were used as the smallpox hospital, including a “dead room” for storing deceased bodies. As can be expected, this area is considered highly haunted, and many have reported paranormal experiences while working in the buildings.

The parade grounds are haunted by a militia soldier who accidentally blew himself up by a cannon while shooting it on the parade grounds. Those who have seen his spectre have found it an upsetting experience.

An ancient burial ground is on the other side of the barracks grounds wall. Accounts of a “White Lady” floating through the wall and walking the parade grounds have been made by several people.
