Uncover the Secrets of the Past

History Of Bawdsey Manor

Bawdsey Manor, a sprawling country mansion constructed between 1886 and 1908, showcases a blend of architectural styles such as gothic, Elizabethan, and Jacobean. The manor, made of red brick with stone dressings, holds a grade II* listing.
In 1886, Sir William Cuthbert Quilter, a stockbroker, financier, and Liberal-Unionist MP, relocated to Bawdsey and constructed a magnificent new mansion with a stunning sea view. He enlisted James Pulham and Son to design various elements in the estate, such as a 'round garden' replacing an old Martello Tower, a water garden, and a rose garden. Lady Quilter, his wife, is believed to have taken on the role of 'Head Gardener.
The property was positioned on a cliff's edge, and an exceptional characteristic of the Pulhamite design is a 300-yard long 'cliff face' made of Pulhamite, standing at a height of 40ft. A pathway runs along the middle of the cliff face, approximately halfway up. It is highly probable that they also supplied the balustrades and terracotta decorations that embellished the gardens, although only a few remain today.

From 1936 until 1990, Bawdsey served as the Air Ministry's confidential radar research facility until it relocated at the start of the war in 1939. Most prominent radar scientists and the initial RAF and WAAF radar staff group received their training at this location.
Prior to the war, Bawdsey operated discreetly as the Air Ministry's clandestine center for radar research. This hidden gem attracted the brightest minds in the field, who conducted groundbreaking experiments and developed cutting-edge radar systems. The facility played a pivotal role in training the initial cohort of radar personnel for both the RAF and WAAF, equipping them with the necessary skills to operate and maintain this revolutionary technology.

Bawdsey Manor has been operating as Alexanders College, a residential international language school, since 1994. The school offered English language courses along with outdoor programs for a maximum of 200 students aged 11-18. Unfortunately, the school ceased operations in 2016.
