History Of Bakewell Old House Museum

Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Peak District, this remarkable Tudor house is a hidden museum gem. Its intriguing history dates back to the reign of Henry VIII when it was initially constructed as a humble tax collector's cottage. Ralph Gell, a resident of Hopton near Wirksworth, took charge of the tithe collection and required a dwelling for his steward, Christopher Plant. Thus, this unassuming cottage came into existence, unaware of the fascinating tales it would soon hold. As time went on and the reign of Elizabeth I dawned, the house underwent significant expansion and transformation into an elegant gentleman's residence. The addition of a luxurious internal toilet, known as a Garderobe, was a testament to the growing comfort and sophistication of the era. The central room of the house boasts a grand fireplace, serving as the heart of the household and witnessing the bustling activity of Tudor cooking. Surprisingly, the house's fate changed in 1777 when Richard Arkwright, the visionary behind the modern factory system, divided the Old House into five cottages for mill workers. These cottages provided adequate accommodation for the workers at the time. However, as the years passed, the cottages fell into disrepair and were deemed unsuitable for human habitation by the 1950s. The house faced imminent demolition until the Bakewell & District Historical Society intervened, rescuing it from destruction. Today, visitors can explore ten captivating rooms filled with various intriguing artefacts generously donated over the past six decades.
