History of Castle Coch

Nestled on the hillside of Cardiff in Wales, Castell Coch is a magnificent building that exudes romance and majesty. Commissioned by the 3rd Marquess of Bute in the 1870s, the castle was designed by William Burges and boasts an interior decoration that is simply exquisite. Burges' fascination with the Middle Ages is evident in the castle's decor, which is both unique and fascinating. The history of Castell Coch is equally intriguing, and the entire location has a fantastic ambience. Lord Bute's vision was to create a grand representation of the Middle Ages, and he achieved this by building a new fortress on the ruins of the original castle. Work began in earnest in the summer of 1875. Burges' unexpected death in 1881 meant that his assistants and craftsmen had to interpret his dream and complete the castle's fantastic decorative ideas. They used local medieval precedents to create stunning and unique decor. The original castle was believed to have been founded by a Welsh Lord in the mid-13th century and had a round tower keep at the southwest corner of a small D-shaped courtyard with a hall on either side. The castle was built with rough rubble sandstone, which is how it got its name, Castell Coch. Despite its appearance, the castle is thought to have been built on the remains of a genuine 13th-century castle. However, Castell Coch has a darker side, as evidenced by the presence of areas of punishment and a dungeon. This suggests that there were episodes of torture, and the fact that the castle was built on foundations used in the Middle Ages allows us to comprehend the types of suffering that would have occurred here. Many battles were fought on the land, and bloodshed would have been spilt.
