History of Gloucester Prison
The current HMP Gloucester was originally Gloucester Castle, which served as a gaol by 1185 and was likely the official county gaol by 1228. The castle remains have been excavated recently and are still visible today. In 1785, an Act empowered county magistrates to build a new gaol, and they acquired the central part of the castle site for that purpose. The castle keep was demolished in 1787, and the new gaol, designed by William Blackburn, was completed in 1791. The extensive buildings housed a gaol, penitentiary, and house of correction and were expanded in the mid-19th century to include a governor's house and a new convict prison. Outside the walls of the county prison, some of the old castle grounds were sold to John Phillpotts in 1816.
