The Priory 1101 Ghost Hunt
Uncover the mysteries of the past at the Priory 1101 ghost-hunting events, where history meets the supernatural.
The Minster Church's Priory 1011 is nestled amidst an ancient graveyard, enveloped by an aura of history. Over the years, this former priory has welcomed a multitude of notable visitors, including Richard II, Mary Tudor, Oliver Cromwell, and Richard II. Originally established in the 12th Century by Herbert du Losinga, the first Bishop of Norwich, the priory served as a sanctuary for the Benedictine order of monks who dedicated themselves to the Parish Church of St. Nicholas, now known as the Minster. Within these hallowed grounds, numerous spectral apparitions have been witnessed, ranging from towering dark figures to the ethereal presence of young children. The site is renowned for its poltergeist activity, often attributed to the enigmatic Egyptian Princess. In the early 1900s, the priory school received a peculiar gift: a mummified corpse from ancient Egyptian tombs. The remains of the Egyptian princess were laid to rest in the churchyard, adding to the mystique of the location. Eerie echoes of heavy thuds and footsteps reverberate through the air, a regular occurrence at Priory 1101. We cordially invite you to venture beyond your comfort zone and join our team for an exhilarating ghost hunt, where the supernatural awaits.
History of The Priory 1101
The Priory, next to St Nicholas Church, was founded by Bishop Herbert de Losinga in 1101 and was most recently used as The Priory Centre.
Founded as a Benedictine priory in 1101, the building was enlarged in 1260 and the hall was rebuilt in 1300. It was home to 15 monks until it was dissolved in 1539, and played host to King Richard II in 1382. It was significantly refurbished in 1978, and again at the turn of the millennium.
Bishop Herbert, the founder of the great church of St. Nicholas, Yarmouth, associated with it a small priory of Benedictine monks, which he made a cell of the cathedral priory at Norwich. The parish service was performed by three chaplains and a deacon, who were nominated by the prior.
This priory was so entirely dependent on Norwich, its accounts being included in those of that cathedral priory, that the references to it are scanty. The taxation of 1291 mentioned that the prior of Yarmouth held lands, rents, and a marsh at Thornton of the annual value of 9s. In the Valor of 1535, the spiritualities of the Norwich Priory at Yarmouth are returned at £31 10s. 4d.
¶In 1349 Simon de Halle, of Great Yarmouth, left by will 2s. to each monk of the Yarmouth Priory; in the same year Thomas de Drayton left a like sum to the prior and 1s. 6d. to each of the three parish chaplains.
The dean and chapter of Norwich held the priory and its possessions at the dissolution, as the successors of the cathedral priory; in 1551 they leased the priory and parsonage of Yarmouth to Robert Sowel for the term of eighty years.
In 1852, a school was founded by Rev Henry MacKenzie with the Great Hall used as its assembly room. In 1852, a school was founded by Rev Henry MacKenzie with the Great Hall used as its assembly room. During the 1900s the school received a special donation special gift that had been found in an elaborate tomb in Egypt: the mummified remains of royalty.
The embalmed corpse was donated by a well-wisher and lay in its casket until a very strange smell started to appear. They opened the casket and saw that the mummified corpse was rotten. The Corpse was buried within the grounds of the graveyard after midnight and the casket was returned back to the school. Soon after the dead-of-night burial, the location started to be disturbed in the night by knocking sounds on their doors – when the tapping noises were investigated, no cause could be found. Rumours began to circulate that a Mummy’s Curse had befallen St Nicholas’ and its Priory and when the smell that had plagued the school returned and was again traced to the casket, they claimed it was further proof.Keen to dispel the whispered theories, the schoolmasters decided to put the issue to bed and reopened the casket in front of the whole school…to their horror, they realised they had mistakenly left behind one of the Princess's arms
Panicked, they rushed the missing limb to the graveyard, removed the earth from on top of the burial site, and reunited it with the other remains.
