History Of Cardiff Castle
The Romans used the future site of Cardiff Castle as a defensive location, building a rectangular fort in AD 55 that was occupied until AD 80. Later, a smaller fort was built on the north of the current site. In the 3rd century, a fourth fort was constructed to combat pirates along the coast, and it forms the of the Roman remains seen on the castle site today. The fort was almost square in design and constructed from limestone brought by sea from Penarth.
Cardiff Castle has a rich history dating back to the Norman of South Wales in the late 1060s. The Normans constructed castles, including Cardiff Castle, on old Roman sites, which saved considerable manpower. The castle was built either by William Conqueror in 1081 or by Robert Fitzhamon around 1091. Fitzhamon used the castle as a base for the occupation of southern Glamorgan.
The history of Cardiff Castle is rich and fascinating.Hamon, the original owner, passed it down to his daughter Mabe and her husband Robert of Gloucester. The castle was later used as a prison for Robert Curthose, the eldest son of William the Conqueror, and was held by Robert of Gloucester during the Anarchy. A shell keep was constructed on top of the motte, possibly under Robert of Gloucester's supervision, and it remains striking feature of the castle to this day.
In the 15th century, the Despensers made Caerphilly Castle their primary residence instead of Cardiff. However, their reign was short-lived as Thomas le Despenser was executed in 1400 for conspiring against Henry IV. The castle was later damaged during the Welsh rebellion of 1401. After passing through several hands, the castle was redeveloped by Richard de Beauchamp, the Earl of Warwick, who built a new tower and restored the gateway in 1430
