History Of The Mansion House
The Mansion House, originally known as Grove House, was built in 1890 as a family home for James Howell. Howell designed the house with the possibility of dividing it into self-contained cottages for two of his children after his death or to facilitate easier sale. In December 1912, Cardiff Corporation purchased the home, and the Mansion House was officially opened on October 13, 1913, by the then Lord Mayor, Alderman Morgan Thomas, J.P.
The house features two imposing front doors, and the function rooms lead off from a grand main hallway with a magnificent staircase, illuminated by a large north-facing window. This window, along with the hall doors, is adorned with hand-chased glass. The interior has preserved many of its original features, notably the extensive use of carved and inlaid woodwork found in the elegant staircase and fireplaces, as well as a pair of full-length mirrors facing each other in the hallway.
On the first floor, you will find the Lord Mayor's former private apartment and four en-suite guest bedrooms that have hosted distinguished visitors from around the world. A significant refurbishment of the building took place in 1998 before the European Council meeting, restoring the house to its former glory.
