In the early 1600s, three women a mother named Joan Flower and her two daughters were employed at the castle but quickly fell from favor. After being unjustly dismissed, the mother, in a moment of desperation and anger, allegedly cursed the Earl and his family for also dismissing her daughters. These three women are now believed to be the infamous witches of Belvoir. Their fate took a grim turn when the two daughters were found guilty under the Witchcraft Act of 1604, facing the severe consequences of a society rife with superstition and fear.

Joan Flower, however, was determined to defend her honor. During a stop in the nearby village of Ancaster, she vehemently protested her innocence and demanded a trial by bread a practice rooted in ancient Anglo-Saxon law that involved offering a piece of consecrated bread to the accused. If the bread was rejected by the body, it was thought to be a definitive sign of demonic possession. Joan believed this ritual could absolve her of any wrongdoing and restore her reputation.

With hope in her heart, Joan took a bite of the blessed bread. Tragically, she collapsed almost immediately, choking to death in front of witnesses. Fearing the repercussions of her unexpected demise, her keepers hastily arranged for her burial in Ancaster, essentially sealing her fate.

As we venture into the vast, eerie, and isolated living quarters of the stable a place shrouded in mystery and whispers of the past what or who will we encounter? Brace yourself to uncover the chilling hauntings and untold stories on this ghostly evening!

History Of Belvoir Castle Estate

For over 900 years, Belvoir Castle has proudly stood on its hilltop, witnessing the ebb and flow of English history. From the Norman Conquest to the present day, the castle has been rebuilt and reimagined several times, with each version reflecting the tastes and challenges of its era. In 1067, Robert de Todeni, William the Conqueror's Standard Bearer, constructed the first castle at Belvoir, strategically positioned on a hill overlooking the Vale of Belvoir.

From 1174 to 1177, the castle briefly came under royal ownership when Henry II seized it during the rebellion of Robert de Ros. In 1461, Belvoir Castle was attacked during the Wars of the Roses, suffering significant damage as the conflict between the houses of York and Lancaster raged across England. In 1508, the castle came into the possession of the Manners family through marriage when Eleanor, the daughter of Lord Ros, married Sir Robert Manners.

In 1649, during the English Civil War, Parliamentarians destroyed Belvoir Castle after it had been used as a Royalist stronghold. Between 1654 and 1668, the 8th Earl of Rutland began rebuilding the castle in a more classical style, moving away from its medieval fortress origins.

From 1801 to 1832, the 5th Duke of Rutland commissioned architect James Wyatt to reconstruct the castle in the fashionable Gothic Revival style that we see today. During World War I, from 1914 to 1918, Belvoir Castle served as a military hospital, treating wounded soldiers from the front lines. During World War II, from 1939 to 1945, the British Army requisitioned the castle, using it as a training ground and storage facility.
