Despite his wife’s desperate pleas to abandon the attempt—while she was holding their child—Clavers forcefully pushed her aside, causing her to fall down the stairs. Upon completing the robbery, he returned to the inn only to find, to his horror, the lifeless bodies of his wife and child at the base of the staircase. In a state of panic, he concealed their bodies in a trunk. Soon thereafter, local law enforcement arrived, having followed Clavers' footprints through the snow. They were confronted by the ghostly apparitions of his wife and child, prompting them to flee in terror. When the officers returned the following morning, the corpses of his wife and child had mysteriously reappeared at the bottom of the stairs.
