History Of The Nunnery
This vast, now derelict location was once home to 250 nuns. The convent was established in Ranelagh Road by the Community of the Holy Name in 1879. During the 1960s, the number of novices declined and, unfortunately, by the mid-1980s, the community was struggling financially and had to sell off land for housing and industrial development. In 1989, a property developer purchased the convent building, and the remaining nuns relocated to a smaller convent in Derby where they still reside. The site includes a beautiful church at its heart, and within the complex are endless corridors and a maze of rooms. The basement is located deep below the building, and being inside the location is a rare privilege.
