In 1920, twenty-six Masonic Brethren from Ryton gathered to discuss the establishment of a new lodge, which they named Ryton Holy Cross Lodge, in honor of the Ryton Holy Cross Church built 700 years earlier in 1220. These Brethren became the founding members. The Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, Lord Ravensworth, consecrated Ryton Holy Cross Lodge, No. 4231, at the Masonic Hall on Jackson Street, Gateshead, on September 30, 1921.
Following the consecration, W.Bro. I.G. Maguire was installed as the Master. Meetings took place at the Ryton Parish Hall, and the first candidate, W.Bro. E. Joicey, P.P.G.W, served as Worshipful Master in 1930 and held the Treasurer position for fourteen years. His legacy endures in the lodge, as he presented the heavy maul that is still in use today.
The growing strength of the Lodge and interest in Masonry in Ryton was evident with the consecration of a daughter Lodge, Ryton St. Mary's, in 1947, just a year after Ryton Holy Cross celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary. Additionally, Ryton Holy Cross Chapter was consecrated in December 1961.
