History Of The Oak House

The Oak House, located in Greets Green, West Bromwich, England, is a historic timber-framed building that dates back to the sixteenth century. While the house's original owners are unknown, the Turton family is closely associated with it, as they were living there by 1634. The Turtons remained the house owners until 1768 when it was passed on to William Whyley, the "natural son" of John Turton. During this time, there was a conflict with the Scarletts over the land, resulting in a confrontation between the Turtons and the Scarletts, with the Turtons emerging victorious. The name "Oak House" is believed to have originated from an oak tree that once stood in front of the house. However, it is also possible that the name was inspired by the oak woodland surrounding the property. In 1800, the oak tree was unfortunately destroyed by fire. In 1768, John Turton advised William Whyley to cut down many of the trees on the property, and these trees were used to make lock gates for the Birmingham Canal, which was being constructed in West Bromwich at the time. By 1836, very few oak trees remained on the premises. Notably, John Wesley, a prominent figure in the late 18th century, preached at the Oak House on two occasions when William Whyley owned it. The Whyley family continued to own the house until 1837, after which it changed hands multiple times before being purchased by Alderman Reuben Farley. Alderman Reuben Farley, who served as the Mayor of West Bromwich three times, acquired the Oak House intending to make it his private residence. However, he ultimately presented it to the town as a museum. To restore the house, Farley enlisted the services of the leading architects in West Bromwich, Messrs. Wood and Kendrick. Their skilled craftsmanship ensured that the restoration was of exceptional quality. On 25 July 1898, the museum was officially opened, and gardens and a bowling green were also established alongside it. Recognising its historical significance, the Oak House was designated as a Grade II* listed building in 1949. To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the gift, the corporation decided to transform the Oak House into a period house furnished with antiques. The formal reopening of the house took place in 1951.
