History of Falstaffs Museum

The history of Stratford upon Avon dates back to the 7th century AD when it was founded by the Saxons during their invasion of Warwickshire. The name "Stratford" is a combination of Celtic and Saxon words, referring to the street ford that was located by the Roman road. The word "Avon" comes from Celtic and means river or water. Initially, Stratford Upon Avon was a small village, but in the late 12th century, it underwent a transformation and became a bustling town. This was a time when trade and commerce flourished, leading to the establishment of many new towns. In 1196, King Richard I granted Stratford the privilege of holding weekly markets, which further contributed to its growth. The town became a hub for various craftsmen, including blacksmiths, carpenters, shoemakers, brewers, and bakers. Additionally, Stratford was renowned for its malting industry, where barley was processed for brewing. 2. The historic building known as The Shreve's House has stood on this site since 1146, making it a witness to centuries of significant events. For the past 500 years, it has been named in honor of its first recorded tenant, an Archer to King Henry VIII. Throughout its long history, The Shreve's House has endured numerous challenges, including the Plague, Fire, Civil War, and even murder. It is said that William Shakespeare himself walked the ancient cobblestones that lead to the massive barn at the rear of the house. During the 17th Century, Civil War troops were accommodated within the building, adding to its historical significance. However, it is the darker side of its past that intrigues many, as local legends suggest that a notorious Serial Killer carried out his heinous acts within the building during its time as a brothel and tavern. Furthermore, the house has strong connections to Witchcraft, with practicing Witches still utilizing an area outside the barn to this day. 3. The Battle of Edgehill, also known as 'The Kineton Fight,' marked the very first battle of the English Civil War and took place approximately 12 miles from Stratford upon Avon. Colonel Behr commanded many of the Parliamentary troops who were billeted at 40 Sheep Street, adding a historical significance to the area. It is rumored that Oliver Cromwell himself stayed in the building prior to the Battle of Worcester. However, due to the lack of documented evidence, it is challenging to verify this
