Overstrand Hall is a country house in Overstrand, Norfolk, now a Grade 11 Listed building originally built in 1899 and 1901
The Country manor was built for the Mills Family, and they primarily used it as a country home. During the 1st World War, it was used as a hospital and has since been used for a variety of purposes. The Country home is magnificent by daylight; however, as dusk falls, it takes on an entirely different feel. With its vast rooms and endless, dark, eerie corridors, there have been many reports of strange, unexplained occurrences, including the Sound of faint, heavy footsteps pacing the corridors. Upon investigation, no one is present. Certain rooms have unexplained, drastic temperature drops. The laughter of children has been heard. This Grade II-listed building, originally constructed between 1899 and 1901, boasts an impressive architectural style that has stood the test of time. Built for the Mills family, it served primarily as a serene countryside retreat. During World War I, however, the hall was transformed into a hospital, and since then it has been repurposed in myriad ways.

By daylight, Overstrand Hall exudes grandeur and beauty, with its sprawling gardens and stately façade. Yet as the sun sets and dusk envelops the estate, the manor takes on a hauntingly different character. Its vast, shadowy rooms and seemingly endless corridors are rife with an unsettling stillness. Numerous reports have surfaced of eerie occurrences, visitors have claimed to hear the distinct Sound of heavy footsteps echoing through the halls, only to discover the corridors empty when they investigate. In certain rooms, the temperature inexplicably plummets, sending chills down the spine. On some occasions, the disembodied laughter of children has been heard drifting through the air, adding to the hall's unsettling reputation.

The History Of Overstrand Hall Norfolk

Frances Fowler conducted a study of Overstrand Hall in 1990 as part of her studies for the Department of Art History at the University of Fife. Her complete work is available for reading at the Cromer Museum. She notes, "It is apparent, when looking at Overstrand Hall, that it is a house produced by an architect still experimenting with ideas concerning style, construction, materials, and organisation. However, it shows Lutyens gaining confidence and a greater simplicity that had been absent from most of his designs up to this point." Edwin Lutyens, later known as Sir Edwin Lutyens, became a leading architect of his time. He was commissioned to build Overstrand Hall as a summer residence for Lord and Lady Hillingdon during the Overstrand building boom of the 1890s. Before this project, he had already developed the Pleasaunce for Lord and Lady Battersea and would go on to design additional buildings in the village, influencing the work of others. While the Pleasaunce made no concessions to local materials or style, Overstrand Hall would differ by incorporating flint into its design. A selection of pictures of Overstrand Hall includes an aerial view, with the original Lutyens building in the foreground and, behind it, an extension built to increase accommodation and enable it to serve as a convalescent home. There had been a previous farm building on the site, referred to as Overstrand Hall on the 1885 Ordnance Survey map. Earlier, in 1838, a map described the property as a "house and yard," owned by Richard Gurney, with land use specified as "yard and garden." Today, the Hall serves as a centre for children. Before this, it functioned as the Leicester and County Convalescent Home, and many residents from the Leicester area remember their stays there following hospital treatment in Leicester
