History Of Jedburgh Castle

Jedburgh Castle Jail, situated on the medieval castle site in the Royal Burgh, was constructed in the 1820s. This remarkable prison stands as a testament to the Howard reform, following the visionary ideas of renowned prison reformer John Howard. Before its establishment, jails were notorious for their deplorable conditions, characterised by filth, overcrowding, and rampant diseases. In these squalid environments, debtors, criminals, children, and even the wrongfully accused were all crammed together, enduring unimaginable hardships.
However, the era of Jedburgh Castle Jail ended in 1886 when it was closed down, and its inmates were relocated to Edinburgh. Over the years, the burgh repurposed parts of the prison for various uses until the 1980s, when it was finally opened to the public. Today, visitors can explore the Jailer's House, which delves into the town's rich history, and experience a glimpse of life in the 1800s by visiting the cell block. It is an eye-opening journey that allows one to appreciate the comforts of the present day.
The prison is enclosed within a curtain wall and designed with three distinct two-story rectangular blocks extending from a central building known as the jailer's house. These prison blocks are interconnected in a U-shaped configuration, with exercise yards linking them. This layout ensures a systematic and organised approach to managing prisoners within the facility.
Interestingly, in 2004, the Jail welcomed its first group of paranormal investigators who reported encountering many unexplained phenomena. This adds an intriguing layer to the historical significance of Jedburgh Castle Jail, captivating those interested in the supernatural and the mysteries surrounding it.
