The Ghosts of the Bull in the Thorn 

​The old coaching house has had many reports of unexplained phenomena, which have seen people close to tears wanting to leave and refusing to return. Glasses have been reportedly thrown from behind the empty bar, in particular areas of this daunting pub, screams and cries are often heard, ghostly unexplained mists and Poltergeist activity is rife, and many guests have witnessed a small boy standing by the fireplace. Horse hooves have been heard, and strange unexplained smells of stale smoke are often reported. Ghost hunts here are certainly not for the faint-hearted.

History of the Bull In Thorn Derbyshire 

The history of the Bull in Thorne dates back many hundreds of years. Standing high and solitary on the old Roman Road between Buxton and Ashbourne, The Bull in' the' Thorn has for more than 500 years been a welcoming resting place for travellers by horse or stagecoach. Many centuries ago, the Roman Road from Little Chester to Buxton was known as 'The Street', running through the uplands near Hurdlow and Pomeroy. It is now called the A515.

Over 700 years ago, a farmhouse alongside the Roman Road was marked on the time's maps. In 1472 it became a hostelry called 'The Bull'. In 1654, the name changed to 'Hurdlow House', and various old documents refer to 'Hurdlow Thorn'; evidently, the name 'Bull 'i th' Thorn' is derived from a combination of these past associations.
