The History Of Cardiff Castle

The Romans established a formidable defensive location at what would become Cardiff Castle by constructing a robust rectangular fort in AD 55, which stood as a guardian of the region until AD 80. In time, a smaller fort was erected to the north of the current site, serving as a strategic lookout. By the 3rd century, a fourth fort was designed to defend against marauding pirates along the coast. This nearly square fort, crafted from fine limestone brought by sea from Penarth, laid the groundwork for the historic Roman remnants we see on the castle grounds today.

Cardiff Castle's rich and captivating history stretches back to the Norman conquest of South Wales in the late 1060s. The Normans, seeking to assert their dominance, constructed impressive castles, Cardiff Castle among them, on the foundations of an old Roman site. This choice not only honored the architectural prowess of the Romans but also saved a considerable workforce. It is widely believed that William the Conqueror commissioned the castle in 1081, though some attribute its construction to Robert Fitzhamon around 1091. Fitzhamon utilized the castle as a strategic base for the occupation of southern Glamorgan, further solidifying Norman control.

The castle’s ownership transitioned to Hamon, its original proprietor, who bequeathed it to his daughter Mabe and her husband, Robert of Gloucester. The stronghold later transformed into a prison for Robert Curthose, the eldest son of William the Conqueror. It was under the stewardship of Robert of Gloucester during the tumultuous period known as the Anarchy. A distinctive shell keep was constructed atop the motte, presumably under Robert of Gloucester's watchful eye, creating a striking silhouette that continues to captivate visitors today.

In the 15th century, the Despensers shifted their allegiances, making Caerphilly Castle their primary residence, thus drawing attention away from Cardiff. However, their reign was abruptly cut short when Thomas le Despenser was executed in 1400 for conspiring against King Henry IV. The castle endured significant damage during the Welsh Rebellion of 1401, a turbulent chapter. After passing through a series of owners, the castle was revitalized by Richard de Beauchamp, the Earl of Warwick, who constructed a new tower and meticulously restored the gateway in 1430.

Throughout its extensive history, Cardiff Castle has also been a pivotal site during the English Civil War, embodying the fierce struggles between Royalist and Parliamentary forces. Control of the castle oscillated between the two factions, each employing surprise attacks and elaborate sieges to claim dominance. Despite its chaos and destruction, Cardiff Castle remained remarkably well-preserved and continues to be a beloved tourist attraction, a testament to its enduring legacy and historical significance.
